Texas Sheet Cake-so easy to make, even easier to eat!
Sadly, that can’t always happen. I over booked our schedule. Everything for Friday. We can go weeks with nothing special on the calendar, no must make commitments, just do what we please. I told my daughter she could have friend over for a bond fire Friday night . I completely forgot Friday night was a dear friend’s retirement party. Everything was going on this past week. My Mom was in the hospital, scheduled to be released Tuesday, then Wednesday, and they finally let her out Thursday. Late. Grace had a Meeting at school Thursday night, I had to feed the family. The house needed to be straightened up. On Friday, I knew I had errands to run and then 2 parties to attend to that night. I just wasn’t in the mood to make that special cake.
A sheet cake was the perfect solution! Especially one that you frost while it’s hot so you don’t have to wait for it to cool off first. In about 30 minutes, I had the cake completely done. Ready for the girls that night. I got all my errands done, was able to spend about an hour at the retirement party before rushing back home to great the first of Cassie’s guests as we both pulled into the driveway at the same time.
The girls all had a great time. Two bags of chips, 4 bottles of soda, a dozen or so hot dogs and 3 bags of marshmallows. Have you ever heard of a game called Chubby Bunny? Basically, how many marshmallows can you put in your mouth and still say Chubby Bunny. I think the record was 11 marshmallows. And my cake? I’m pretty sure at least a few of the girls went home and raved about it.

Please be very careful with the marshmello game children have suffocated this way. The marshmello gets soggy and expands. They choak with laughter then you cannot get it all out. Be safe.
I work in a hospital.

SO true. I know of a college kid who died from this game. hey were drinking as well so probably nobody was quite aware of what was happening until it was too late. But why let your pre-teens play a game that could eventually pose a life hazard?

Mmmmmmmm… you sure do know how to bring a pregnant lady to your site! I saw your cake at the I <3 Fridays linkup and just had to see the recipe. I'm 36 weeks along and am suddenly craving everything chocolate under the sun! I may just HAVE to make this over the weekend! :) Oh, and I we love the Chubby Bunny game--used to play it a lot in college at our Intervarsity Christian Fellowship meetups. It was always a great way to get people laughing and having fun together!
PS–I’m a new follower! Pinning this recipe! 😉

Haven’t talked to you in awhile, so I stopped by to see what you’ve been up to. Love sheet cakes since you just make it and forget it. Plus my pan has a travel lid, so I can make the cake and take it with me without a fuss. Yours looks very chocolatey!

What is it about a Texas Sheet Cake that everyone likes? Such simple ingredients that are more than the sum of its parts? Just love this cake.

As a 55 yr old Texas girl, I grew up on this recipe and have made it for the last 37 yrs of marriage. The only difference is my recipe and others call for buttermilk instead of sour cream, and mine also calls for cinnamon although the one my aunt uses does not. Either way, it’s an awesome cake!

This is the cake I always have to make for my 2 girls. I think I got the recipe when I was about 16 (1971), and have been making them ever since. Only difference is that I’ve always used a 9×13 pan instead of a sheet, because that’s what the recipe I was given called for. No cinnamon, and no nuts, either. In the deeper pan, that awesome poured frosting is like fudge….. Lol…
When I get to go home (Texas) to visit my kids and family, at least 2 of these are made during the visit!
Best. Cake. Ever.

I just made the frosting in this recipe for some cupcakes. It was the first time I tried making frosting from scratch (I usually use store-bought). I doubt I’ll ever buy frosting again! So yummy! Thanks!

I’ve been making Texas sheet cake for as long as I can remember. I wanted to compare the ingredients to see if I could make it even better. Yours has sour cream, I use buttermilk. Also, a big difference is your cake recipe calls for 1 cup of butter. Mine is 1 cube of butter. Is that right…… I really want to try yours:) Than;ks.
Joan Hayes says
I’m not sure what a cube of butter is. 1 cup of butter = 1/2 pound. Hope that helps.
