Sweet and Salty Crackers

Sweet and Salty Crackers-a great way to use up leftover crackers

Sweet and Salty Crackers-a great way to use up leftover crackers

We’re snackers in my house. We love to forage through the kitchen for something to snack on. We tend to go for the easy snacks. I can have a block of Cheddar Cheese in the fridge and it will sit there for weeks…until I slice it. Then it magically disappears. In less than a day. I promise you, everyone in this house know how to use a knife, they’re just to lazy to do it.

Seriously, my kids would rather eat Ramen soup than a cold cut sandwich. Not because they like it better but because it’s easier for them, less work. You see, raman soup requires a bowl and some water.  Put it in the microwave for a few minutes and done. They don’t even break it up.

Now for a sandwich. You need a plate. Then 2 slices of bread. Then you have to open the refrigerator and get out the cold cuts and cheese. Oh, and either mayonnaise or mustard. I’m getting tired just writing this labor intensive chore.

Let me rest a minute.

Ok, back to making a sandwich. You’ll need a knife to spread the mayo/mustard, add the meat and cheese to the sandwich.

Now that could be it, but….you still have to put everything away. And we didn’t even touch on adding extras like lettuce.

So, yeah, snacks need to be easy.

These Crackers are the perfect balance of sweet and salty and the pecans on top give just the right nuttiness (wow, I thought that was going to be my new made up word but spell check let it go!)

Ingredients

  • 1 sleeve of crackers (your choice, I use Club Crackers)
  • 1/2 stick of butter (1/4 cup)
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup chopped nuts

Instructions

  1. Line a sided baking sheet with foil. Place crackers side touching on baking sheet.
  2. Melt butter then add brown sugar and cinnamon, stir till well combined.
  3. Spread or dab butter mixture onto crackers, be generous, the more the better.
  4. Then sprinkle nuts on crackers. Place in a preheated 350 degree oven for about 10 minutes. Remove from oven and let cool before trying to remove from pan. Gently peel crackers off aluminum foil and enjoy!

Hi Joan, these crackers look delicious. I’ve done something similar with graham crackers but mine doesn’t have the brown sugar and cinnamon added. I may have to add both next time. Happy New Year!

Love the ideas, and will be trying the graham crackers next time.
As for the salty peanuts, whenever I have a recipe that calls for peanuts, I usually use dry roasted, it’s the only type we keep in the house!

I love this idea! I hate waste and this is a terrific way to use stale or leftover crackers! Thanks!

Discovered your site on Facebook and just had to follow since my motto is chocolate, chocolate and more chocolate!

Hi. I’ve made these with saltines (the ‘other’ club cracker ๐Ÿ˜‰ n then added chocolate chips at the end and they’re great. Never made them with slightly stale crackers though (good idea not to waste things) I just made them straight out from a Penzeys magazine. Yum!

These are GREAT! I’ve been making a recipe similar to these for years. You can substitute toffee chips if you know someone who doesn’t like nuts.

One note of caution…..do NOT used margarine! Margarine makes for a sticky mess and very chewy (think gummy) crackers. For this recipe, crisp is best.

Try it, you won’t regret it.

I’m with you Becky, I rarely use margarine in my baking, if you’re going to take the time to make up a treat, use butter!

Hi Jo, the correct measurement is 1/4 cup thanks for letting me know about my typo! it’s fixed now.

Wow I’m definitely going to try this! How many crackers did this recipe make you? I’m not sure if I will have enough crackers. ๐Ÿ™‚ thank you!

Amy, we just make one sleeve of crackers at a time, it the only way to maintain portion control, lol.

You made me laugh! My family is the same with the food prep efforts. I hide the good cheese in the fridge in the back of the drawer. I know no one will look that far back. They pull it out about 6-8 inches and if it’s not in sight, we must be out! I can’t wait to make these. I love the ones with chocolate chip but have never tried them with cinnamon.

I would be addicted to these!!! Love this idea, I will try this for a party snack sometime. I know that I can not make them for the two of us, or they will end up gone before I know it!

Your recipe says to gently peel… this sounds like a great recipe for the non-stick foil perhaps! I can’t wait to try them… been in a sweet/salty type of mood lately. ๐Ÿ™‚

I made these tonight and they looked just like the picture and they are really tasty but next time I am going to bake them on parchment paper because I literally had to peel them off the foil…hopefully the parchment will not stick to them. Thank you for the recipe. This is the first time I have commented on a any recipe…but this recipe I will recommend to many!

I’m so glad you enjoyed them! Yes, try the parchment paper, These definitely will stick so you want to line the baking tray with something.

I make these using graham crackers. My grown son begs for them.
I took some to a church function and couldn’t find them when ready to serve. Two of the men had tried them and decided to hide them so they could take them home with them. Lol.

Has anyone tried these with white sugar? I’m out of brown sugar, but dying to try this recipe.

of course you can use just white sugar!

I make something similar too. It uses Graham crackers and a full stock each of buttery and margarine. You have to cook the syrup on the stove first. I love almonds on it! I never line my sheets to. I just remove when hot using a thin metal spatula and put them right onto my counter to cool. They stick and are a bit difficult but soooo worth it! Maybe your way would be easier lol

Almonds are a great change up!
