Cinnamon Churros-a tasty deep fried Mexican pastry covered in Cinnamon Sugar

Have you ever had a Churro? I’ve had them maybe 6-7 times my life. It’s a Spanish Pastry. Deep fried but not greasy, crunchy, sweet but not too sweet. Down in Miami, when I lived in South Florida, you could easily find them. And you wanted them fresh. Just amazing.

I’ve been in Georgia 15 years now. I hadn’t even thought about a Churro until we took the kids to Disney and Universal Studios 2 years ago. Oh and if you love Harry Potter, like we do (we’ve all read every book and watched the movies over and over!) you’ve got to go to Universal in Orlando. You really feel like you are at Hogwarts, in Hogsmead, oh, oh oh! And Butterbeer is the bomb! I could make myself sick on that stuff. And when you go into Olivander’s Wand Shop, they recreate the scene form the movie with Harry picking out his wand. The chose my son to play Harry. A moment in time I know he’ll never forget.

Sorry, I got distracted, anyway, we had Churros while there. The kids loved them. I knew I’d search the internet when we got home to find a recipe. Life went on, I forgot about Churros. Then I stumbled across  Mowielicious. It was her photography that drew me in. She is fabulous. I can’t even tell you how I found her, probably pinterest. Her Churros are a work of art, and she serves them with a chocolate dipping sauce.

It was her recipe that sealed my fate. I did have to do conversions to American standard measurements, but her instructions were easy and my Churros turned out just like we all remembered them.

Cinnamon Churros

Ingredients

  • 1/3 cup butter
  • 1 cup plus 1 tablespoon water
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 cup flour, sifted
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 3 eggs beaten
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
  • oil for frying
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Assemble all your equipment first. You'll need a heavy medium saucepan to prepare your batter and a second pan for frying. Line a cookie sheet with paper towels for draining. Combine sugar and cinnamon and place in a large plastic bag, set aside. A damp cloth or sponge will also be handy. This is a very sticky dough. A pasty bag fitted with a large star tip.
  2. Bring butter and water to a rolling boil. Remove from heat and with a hand mixer, add salt, flour and cinnamon until combined. Dough will appear crumbly. Add in eggs and vanilla, beat again until dough becomes smooth.
  3. Place dough in pastry bag and carefully pipe dough into oil heated to 350 degrees to desired length. Use a knife to cut off dough from tip. Fry dough for about 3 minutes turning half way. Remove from oil to drain on paper towels for a few minutes. Place fried dough in bag with cinnamon sugar and shake to coat. Repeat with remaining dough.

Notes

If you don't have a pastry bag, don't let that stop you from trying to make Churros. Just use 2 spoons and drop by balls into heated oil. They will still taste fantastic.

  2. These look great! My daughter used to work in a part of town here where there was a street vendor who made the churros. She brought me one and it was fantastic! We used to have them all the time – and then she changed offices! I had no idea they were so easily made. And when I say “easy” I meant easy for me to watch how you made them. I’m going to give it a go soon!

Joan, every time I’ve gone to Disneyland (which was a lot as a kid!) or the fair, I only eat churros. It’s kind of weird but makes my tummy happy each time I bite into those hot, cinnamony sticks of heaven. Making homemade churros is brilliant and I’m SOOOO doing it!

  16. These look divine!! They’d be perfect on a cold, weekend morning. Especially with the chocolate sauce (where is it?). :)

  24. YUM! Just pinned these – so delicious!!

  25. Amanda Sprague says:

I was just wondering what size star tip did you use? You say a large star tip but when I went through my pastry tips for my friend to use to make churros, apparently none I had was large enough because the dough was so thick. So which size did you use? Thank you.

    • You can use a 1M or a 1G star tip. Or just use what you have available. The dough is thick so you will have to squeeze hard to push the dough through the tip but it’s worth the effort!
