One of my favorite books is “Forrest Gump-My Favorite Chocolate recipes” Life is like a box of Chocolates. I haven’t found a recipe in this book I don’t love. And I’ve tried most of them.
Maybe I’m a little partial to the movie too. I don’t think Tom Hanks knows how to make a bad movie.
“Run Forrest, Run!”
Sorry, I had to say it.
I used to make peanut butter fudge using chocolate chips and peanut butter chips until I got this book. Now I only make it with this recipe. I have made a few adjustments over the years but this is still one of the best fudge recipes I’ve ever used.

Chocolate Peanut Butter Fudge
Ingredients
- 1/4 cup butter or margarine
- 1/3 cup milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 4 1/2 cups powdered sugar
- 1/2 cup cocoa powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup peanut butter
Instructions
- Melt butter in a medium saucepan. Remove from heat and add milk and vanilla.
- Sift sugar, cocoa and salt together.
- Gradually add sugar mixture to milk mixture stirring until blended.
- Stir in peanut butter. I try to leave a few streaks of peanut butter showing but you can stir it completely in if you want.
- Press mixture into buttered 8-inch square pan. I line my pan with parchment for easy removal.
- Cover and chill. Cut into squares. Keep refrigerated.
Notes
This is a soft fudge, I slightly freeze my fudge for easier cutting then store in the fridge.

White Chocolate Fudge with Cranberries and Pistachios
Charlie Lehmann says
Just wondered …what is powdered sugar?? Could I use normal sugar?? Thanks!!
Joan Hayes says
Hi Charlie, Powdered sugar is the same as confectioner’s sugar or icing sugar. I wouldn’t recommend using regular granulated sugar, it would just make the fudge gritty and not smooth.
Shannon says
This is the pretty much the recipe my mom and gram taught me but we do use regular (granulated) sugar. We add the sugar to the butter and heat, melt it together. Then add the rest and boil for 2 – 3 minutes. I’m going to try this though as it sounds like a little less work.
Sadaf says
The amount of sugar seems to be too much!
Can I use less than that?
Joan Hayes says
If you use less sugar your fudge won’t thicken up, you’ll have more of a chocolate-peanut butter mush.
Joanne Seamans says
I’m going to try this recipe. I hate marshmallow fluff and a lot of fudge recipes contain that.
Cheryl A-Z says
I am looking for ‘the old fashioned’ chocolate fudge recipe. My mother used to make a choco fudge in a cast iron skillet….dropping a bit into cold water to see if it was ready to take off the heat and let set for a time before beating it……. That taste, texture ……wonderful!!! She used powdered Hersey’s cocoa I think…….
Anna says
Cheryl that was the Herseys coco recipe they had on their can, my Mom made it all the time. Google it.
Melany says
Hi !! Omg i love this website so much!! Excuse my english, i’m french, i would love to try this fudge recipe, but the problem is: is it possible that i can make a fudge without peanut butter? Will it work?
I would like to make a fudge without peanut butter, marshmallow or condensed milk…. I guess it’s impossible? XD
Thank you!! 🙂

If you’re just looking for a chocolate fudge recipe, I’d recommend this Milk Chocolate Fudge https://chocolatechocolateandmore.com/2012/12/milk-chocolate-fudge/
Melany says
Okay thank you for answer me! I’ll try this recipe too \(^ω^)/
Rosie says
I have been making one like this for years. Its the only one i make too. I sometimes leave out the cocoa and just make it with the peanubutter. And i use a doubleboiler. Got it of the back of the powersugar box years ago.
Melanie says
Hello! If I made this recipe with Natvia icing sugar, do you think it would be almost as good?
Joan Hayes says
Yes you can use the Nativia sugar just be sure to check the package for substitution equivalents.
judy says
when you add the milk does it need to be warm or hot? for this fudge
Joan Hayes says
You want your milk at room temperature. Cold milk will cause the butter to solidify.
heather miller says
Can i use this recipe but just leave the peanut butter out.?
Joan Hayes says
If you’re looking for a Chocolate Fudge recipe, I’d recommend using this one for Milk Chocolate fudge instead of adapting a recipe https://chocolatechocolateandmore.com/2012/12/milk-chocolate-fudge/
cassie says
What brand/type of peanut butter would you recommend using?
Joan Hayes says
I usually use Skippy or Jif but most peanut butter brands should work.
DIANNA HARTY says
I make the marshmellow fudge receipe , my trick is to add 3 ounces of cream cheese. I also quadruple the fudge receipe at the same time. I pour half as regular fudge and then add creamy peanut butter for peanutbutter fudge. for regular peanut butter fudge I use peanutbutter chips.
Jill says
Can you use aluminum foil or wax paper instead of parchment? I don’t have parchment paper. Or would it be better to just butter the pan?
Joan Hayes says
Yes you can use foil or the wax paper. Parchment paper is just stronger and won’t rip or tear as easily.
Pam says
this is the second fudge recipe I have tried and for some reason both came out dry and crumbly, not smooth and creamy. what could i be doing wrong? I followed both recipes to the T!
Joan Hayes says
I’m sorry this is happening for you. There are a couple of possibilities. For this fudge, I’d try cutting back on the powdered sugar. Or sifting it before measuring. Powdered sugar that’s sat around for a while will compact in the packaging and it can make a huge difference when measuring.
Tara B. says
I also had the same problem with mine, it was really dry when I tried mixing the milk mixture with the sugar mixture. I had just purchased all of the ingredients and I did sift the sugar etc just before. I just added an extra splash of milk to loosen it up some. It came out awesome. Thank you for this great recipe. This is only my second attempt at fudge. I made the mint chocolate chip one earlier today. Also perfect. I will be bringing these to work for an office Christmas party. Hopefully they enjoy it just as much as I did. If not, no biggie I will eat it.
Tara says
Sweetened condensed, evaporated or whole milk?
Misty says
I never write reviews, but I made this for the 4th and everyone loved it! I think it was the best dessert I’ve ever made. I hesitated on making it at first since I wasn’t sure if the amount of powdered sugar was a typo, but it was perfect! So glad I tried it. Thank you for the recipe!!
Neva Wright says
Hi Joan, your fudge sounds perfect for little xmas treats, I’m off sugar tho, would this work the same if I sub the sugar with raw honey? Thank you. Neva.
Ralph says
can I use melted baking chocolate instead of cocoa
Karen Aromatorio says
If you do then you will need to reduce the amount of sugar and butter.
