Rich Chocolate Ice Cream made with a custard base make this so smooth and creamy
OK, this is not a kiddie ice cream. This is an ice cream for adults. No, it’s not boozy. It’s decadent, it’s smooth, it’s rich, it’s creamy. It’s like silk sliding down your throat. Not for kids. They just wouldn’t appreciate it. At least my kids wouldn’t.
Well maybe they would. I honestly don’t know because I hid this ice cream in the back of the freezer, under the frozen veggies, so they wouldn’t find it. I know, I’m a horrible mother. I admit it. It’s not like I don’t let them have ice cream. They get plenty. And I even add fun stuff to their ice cream like strawberries and Nutty Bars.
But this ice cream was good. I mean really good. I mean I licked the ice cream beater from the machine and had chocolate ice cream drool running down my chin good.
I wasn’t going to let a drop of this ice cream go to waste. Especially on a child. I know, I’m really trying to earn that mother of the year award. But seriously, I can buy the cheap ice cream and pour some chocolate syrup on it and they’d be happy.

I have to laugh at you Joan because I’m laughing at myself. There was a wonderful bakery in our town years ago where my husband would buy a really, really good birthday cake for me each year. I would make my kids most favorite dessert for my birthday so they wouldn’t eat my cake. Then I’d hide it (just like you) in the back of the freezer and every night after they’d go to bed, I”d slice a BIG piece for myself and my husband 🙂 We would savor each bite. It was a sad day each year when the cake was gone! I think your ice cream really looks like it’s worth hiding! 🙂
Thank you Chris for letting me know I’m not alone!
ahhh you’re speakin’ my language!!! CHOCOLATEYYYYYY
Yummmm! I would definitely want to keep this for myself 🙂
Yum. I love good chocolate ice cream so I’m giving your’s a try. Did you know that National Chocolate Ice Cream Day is June 7? I’m going to make your ice cream in celebration of that day and post it on my blog with a mention and link back to you, if that’s OK with you. Have a great day.
I’ll look forward to it and thanks on the tip about Ice Cream Day, not that I need a reason to eat more ice cream 😉
This looks perfect for a chocolate ice cream lover!
what??? That looks awesome!!! i love that it doesn’t take an ice cream machine {I don’t have one} Thanks for linking up to Tasteful Tuesdays and for the link back :o) Can’t wait to see what you bring next week. Emily @ Nap-Time Creations
oh, and I just posted looking for some help with my blog… maybe you can offer some advice?
I much prefer “real” ice cream to two or three ingredient versions. This looks wonderful! Thanks so much for sharing at Two Cup Tuesday on Pint Sized Baker. I’ve pinned it!
Chocolate Ice Cream is my favorite! Pinned. I know what I’m making this weekend..thanks. 🙂
What kind of coca do u use? Is it sweetens or unsweetened
Sara, I use unsweetened Cocoa Powder.
This looks so decadent! I’m not even a big chocolate ice cream person, but this look so delicious I’d definitely give it a go.
Looks wonderful! Thanks so much for sharing at Weekend Potluck.

This sounds so good! My siblings, cousin, and I love ice cream. We always want ice cream. I would really love to try this. What ice cream maker do you use?
Oh my gosh – this looks so delish! Thanks for sharing at Project Inspired! Pinned!
I was just wondering, the last step says “Completely chill mixture in the refrigerator for 4 hours or overnight is best. Freeze in Ice cream maker according to manufacturer’s directions.”. Do i have to use an ice cream maker? can i just freeze it in the freezer??
You don’t have to use an ice cream maker but it will take longer to freeze up. probably at least 12 hours. I have trouble waiting that long for ice cream, haha
Good God! This ice cream puts all others to shame! It looks so rich and creamy I only wish I had the patients to wait for it to freeze! lol. Thank you so much for this website. I will never be skinny again, but who cares! I get to eat chocolate, chocolate and more chocolate and I am happy, happy, happy and that’s all that matters in life! I can’t wait to try this recipe using chocolate and a French Vanilla combination. That would be ridiculously tasty! I’ll let you know how it turns out! ( If I can get it to the freezer ) lol
omg!! this looks sooo deliciouss….can i use whipping cream instead of heavy cream??
yes you can, enjoy!
OMG!! I made this today and my husband and I are BLOWN away!! This is by far the best ice cream I have ever made! Thank you 🙂
So glad you all enjoyed it!
Can I add peanut butter or peanut butter chips to this
Yes you can. If wanting to swirl peanut butter in, I’d recommend hand swirling it after removing from your ice cream maker or you’ll either end up with large clumps of peanut butter or it could completely mix in where you don’t notice the addition. For peanut butter chips, add them during the last 5 minutes of processing in your machine.
