Mookies

Published August 30, 2011

What are Mookies? Well let me tell you.

It’s Monday-day in the kitchen with the kids.

I have a bunch of icing in the freezer from my cake decorating classes that needs to be used.

Solution-CUPCAKES!

And I still have a friend’s church cookbook. I want to try a few more of the recipes before I give it back.

I find just the recipe.

Off to the kitchen.

Here are the ingredients listed in the cookbook:

1 1/4 c. plain flour
1 1/4 c. self rising flour
1 c. Crisco
2 c. sugar
5 eggs
1 c. sweet milk
1 tsp. vanilla

Ok, plain flour, I assume all-purpose flour.
Sweet milk, I have to think about this. What are they talking about? I decide they must mean sweetened condensed milk.

The directions are short and sweet. Mix all ingredients well, bake, blah, blah, blah….

So with Cassie behind the whisk and other utensils and Grace holding the camera, off we go….

I’m still mourning the loss of my hand mixer, and haven’t replaced it yet, so we are mixing everything by hand. It’s how they did it on “Little House on the Prairie” and everything looked good on that show.

Combine the Crisco and sugar. Cassie used the pastry blender to achieve this.

Now to add the eggs (Grace got some great action shots here)

Grace nailed the shot on the fourth egg!

Ok, eggs are all in.

Now for the “sweet milk”

Remember, I think  “Sweet milk” is sweetened condensed milk. Need 1 cup.

Anticipation, it’s making me wait….

Finally a whole cup…

Now for the flour

Love this shot too

Mix it all up.
Add the vanilla.

And one final ingredient….

Mini Chocolate chips, about 3/4 cup.

Mix it all together.

Now line muffin tins with cupcake papers

and fill them.

Bake in a preheated 350 degree oven –
22-25 minutes  for regular sized muffins and
15-18 minutes for mini muffins.

I was so upset my cupcakes had fallen…

All of them fell,

Then we tasted one…

and they were really good! The tops taste like a cookie and the bottoms taste like a muffin.

A “Mookie” is born.

Make sure to remove from muffin tins immediately and cool on wire racks.

My girls still really wanted to use the icing so….

I will go back to the kitchen and try the recipe the right way.
Now that I know that “sweet milk” is whole milk.
And give full credit for the recipe.

Sometimes it’s a really good thing when you make a mistake.
This was one of them.

And if you think this was too many pictures….

Grace took 178,

you got off easy.

About Grace

When I was younger, I was constantly in the kitchen helping my mom bake. It was fun getting to play with the flour and always getting to lick the spoon. I’ve always expressed an interest in baking and now I feel that it’s the right time for me to take over. I am a college student working towards a nursing degree as well as a full-time aunt to the sweetest little kids (they might pop up in some of the posts). I’ve learned most of what I know about baking and cooking from my mom, and I am continuing to self-teach through trial and error, which means plenty of sweets to be eaten. Read more...

Sweet milk would have been whole milk as opposed to buttermilk. I think the mookies fell because of condensed milk. I imagine they would be a bit chewy on top. They sound delicious.

Sweet milk is just regular milk, not sweetened condensed milk. It’s sweet as opposed to sour milk or buttermilk. That is how our grandmothers referred to it. That may be why they didn’t stay rounded when they cooled. But if you liked them the way you made them, go with it.

I just looked it up. Sweet milk in a recipe is whole milk. How did your recipe turn out with sweetened condensed milk?
