Ice cream is one of my biggest guilty pleasures, but give me ice cream with a topping or two, plus whipped cream, and I’m on cloud nine! I have fond memories of my grandpa taking me out for strawberry milkshakes and hot fudge sundaes at United Dairy Farmers, in Ohio. We’d go up there about once a year to visit and UDF was the absolute best. The milkshakes were so thick, they’d often stop up the straw (no one likes a thin milkshake)! But as much as I adored the milkshakes, it was the sundae that took my heart. I get nostalgic just thinking of that rich, viscous hot fudge, draped over a mound of vanilla ice cream, and covered with a cloud of whipped cream, and a cherry.
When I got a little older, we discovered a place in downtown Raleigh. I think it originally was called Doug’s, or Steve’s, before becoming Cream and Bean — a ice cream shop-coffee shop hybrid. It was a charming little college town spot, right across from North Carolina State University and its iconic bell tower. Each mismatched table had mismatched chairs with painted vignettes of the campus, and other places in Raleigh (from what I remember). There was also an older than the hills piano that anyone could go up and tinker with, and we always did. One of the reasons we loved going to Cream and Bean so much was they never skimped, not on anything. Even though we’d order a small sundae, it was really a large by their standards. It was an inviting family-run spot, the kind of institution you hope never goes out of business. Sadly, it did, and all too soon. They put in a vespa shop and it broke my heart.
But every single time we went, I’d order a coffee ice cream sundae with hot fudge, whipped cream, and a cherry. It’s still my favorite sundae to date, and even today, if I concentrate hard enough, I can still taste it. I’ve even gotten close in trying to re-create it at home with homemade coffee ice cream. So in the spirit of summer, ice cream, and all things related, we’ve got a very important roundup on the blog today. What’s ice cream without a topping or two? We don’t mean Hershey’s or Smuckers, we mean the real deal: homemade toppings; every kind of topping you need to make your ultimate ice cream sundae. Cool off, and enjoy!
