Buttery Soft Pretzels-like those pretzels you can get at the mall only better!
We love the pretzels in the mall! Wetzel’s Pretzels, Auntie Ann’s, I’m sure there are others.
You know those warm, soft, dipped in butter pretzels. They melt in your mouth, just the right amount of salt.
And sooooooo soft.
And I love finding recipes on the internet.
Just type in what you want, what you are craving, and you’ll probably find someone has already done it and SHARED the recipe! Thanks to all who do! We never go to the mall, and even if we did, pretzels from the mall for 5? Do you know how much that costs? I can think of better things to spend the of money on.
So again, I love the internet and all the recipes everyone shares.
I found this recipe at allrecipes.com
Buttery Soft Pretzels.
Thank you Christa Rose for sharing.
I read the reviews, was definitely a thumbs up.
And easy ingredients, no special flour or weird ingredients needed, I have everything we need.
In small bowl, dissolve yeast and 1 teaspoon sugar in warm water.
Let stand until creamy and foamy, about 10 minutes.
Mix and form into a dough. If the mixture is dry, add one or two tablespoons of water. Knead the dough until smooth, about 7-8 minutes.
Lightly oil a large bowl, place the dough in the bowl and turn to coat with oil. Cover with plastic wrap and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
Preheat oven to 450 F. In a large bowl, dissolve baking soda in hot water. This is really fun for the kids to watch, it will bubble up like a volcano!
When risen, turn dough out onto lightly floured surface and divide into 12 equal pieces. We put the plastic wrap over the dough not being used to keep it moist.
Roll each piece into a rope and twist into a pretzel shape. We just make sticks, about the length of my finger. Much easier for the kids to make. Pretzel fingers? hmmmm….
Once all the dough is shaped, combine your baking soda to your hot water to create a bath for your pretzels. Dip each pretzel into the bath and place on a greased baking sheet. Sprinkle with kosher salt. We didn’t have kosher salt but we do have a salt grinder and it was perfect for these.
Go light on the salt, trust me.
Bake in preheated oven for 8 minutes, until browned.
Now for the good stuff. Immediately after removing from oven, brush tops of pretzels with melted butter.
We also left the salt off some of the pretzels and on those pretzels we rolled them in toppings.
Let your tastebuds go wild.
Better than the mall….

Oh, thank you sooo much for this recipe! These are awesome! I will not be buying anymore from the malls. Why should we? We can have our own at home for pennies and hot from the oven with any toppings we want. Thank you!!

I make something similar to this almost every Friday as part of our appetizer menu. But, I make them in little balls in my mini muffin tin. Love!

Just found this recipe, and made them with whole wheat flour. Came out delicious! I did some with salt, some cinnamon and sugar, and then my fave: with garlic salt. So good!
Jocelyn says
Those pretzels from the mall are so good, but man are they pricey. What a fun idea to make your own…it has been on my bucket list for the past few years!!!
Joan Hayes says
Jocelyn, watch out, these are addictive. I never get to make them anymore though. Anytime these come up, the kids fight over who’s going to make them (including my son!)
P.J. says
OMG! my mouth was drooling & COULD NOT STOP. The pretzels looked awesome, the fudge omg! & some of the other goodies I NEED TO TRY!
Thank you so much for sharing <3
Bonny Lee says
I have a quick question about your pretzels – did you also put salt on the pretzels, before baking, that you intended to put cinnamon and sugar on?
Thanks. Just came upon your site today. I’m going to try several of your recipes!
Joan Hayes says
On the ones I rolled in the cinnamon sugar, I left the salt off but they’d also be good, a sweet/salty blend if they were salted.
Karen @BakingInATornado says
Darn waiting for yeast, I want these RIGHT NOW!
Bonny Lee says
I’m still waiting for an answer to my recent comment. Could you answer please?
Joan Hayes says
Bonnie, if you’re referring to the question about salting, I did answer you above.
Kelli says
I am loving your site! We made wheat bread and now these pretzels! Just realized we have to leave, Can I refrigerate the dough before or after rising?
Joan Hayes says
Kelli, yes you can refrigerate the dough before rising, it will still slowly rise in the refrigerator. If you won’t be able to use the dough within 24 hours, you can freeze it.
Sissy says
I was just wondering if I can cut down the 1/2 cup of sugar to maybe a 1/4 of a cup? I don’t really like sweet bread and I will already have the teaspoon of sugar in the dough…
Joan Hayes says
Yes, reducing the sugar by 1/4 cup would be fine, as long as you have some sugar to work with the yeast you’ll be fine. Enjoy!
Question says
1/2 cup of baking soda seems like a lot…
Joan Hayes says
You’re making a baking soda bath with the 4 cups of hot water, so the measurement is correct.
Farina says
Hello there. I got the recipe on facebook and finally made them today. They turned our soft and yummy! I used 1 1/2cup water for the dough though. Thank you for sharing a legit recipe and now I’m sharing it with all my friends! 🙂
Joan Hayes says
So glad you enjoyed them!
ann says
In Germany they dip the pretzels in lye….I’m pretty sure…gives it that pretzel flavor.
Natalie says
