Homemade Tres Leches Cake – a made-from-scratch vanilla cake doused with sweet, creamy milk mixture and topped off with homemade whipped cream!
There’s this Cuban restaurant a few miles from where we live. It’s amazing, to say the least. The food, the culture, everything.
And one thing about me is I’m always going to look for dessert. No matter where we are, I’m AT LEAST going to look at the dessert menu. And if something catches my eye, I’m getting it.
They have the most bomb-diggity Tres Leches cake EVER. But I can’t always afford to go out to a restaurant just for one of their desserts.
So, I made it from scratch.
Here’s how I made it.
Homemade Tres Leches Cake
Made-From-Scratch Vanilla Cake
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 2 1/2 tsps baking soda
- 1 tbsp cinnamon
- 4 large eggs
- 1 1/2 granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted (1 stick)
- 1 cup of milk
- 1 tbsp vegetable oil
- 2 tsps vanilla (or measure with your heart)
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and grease a 9×13 baking dish.
In a medium sized bowl, whisk the flour, salt, baking soda and cinnamon. Set aside.
Using a stand mixer, beat the eggs and sugar together for about 5 minutes on high speed. It should turn white and creamy.
Add in the milk, butter, vegetable oil, and vanilla.
Slowly add in the flour mixture.
Pour the batter into the baking dish and bake for about 30-35 minutes until the top is golden and a toothpick comes out clean.
Set aside to cool completely.
Sweet and Creamy Milk
- 12 oz can evaporated milk
- 14 oz can sweetened condensed milk
- 1/4 cup of milk
- 1 tsp cinnamon
In a medium mixing bowl, whisk all the ingredients together until completely combined.
Once the cake is cooled, use a fork or straw to poke holes throughout the cake.
Pour the sweet and creamy milk mixture as evenly as possible all over the cake and into the holes.
Place in the fridge.
Homemade Whipped Cream
- 1 cup of heavy whipped cream
- 1 cup of powdered sugar
- splash of vanilla
Using a stand mixer or hand mixer, whip the heavy whipping cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla together for 3-5 minutes on high speed. A stiff peak should form.
Spread the whipped cream evenly onto the cake.
Serve and enjoy!
